Krugerrand

The legal tender 22 carat gold Krugerrand was the concept of the South African Chamber of Mines and first became available to the public in 1967. When the gold standard was under pressure in the 1960's a steady process of deregulation took place in the gold market. The Chamber of Mines developed the Krugerrand as an investment opportunity for the “man in the street”.

The Krugerrand contained exactly 1 troy-ounce fine gold and its value was based on the daily gold price. It was also legal tender in South Africa, its country of issue and was mass produced so that it could be sold at a relatively low premium over the prevailing gold price. In 1980 the fractional Krugerrands (½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz) were added to the 1oz Krugerrand to assist the smaller buyer to obtain gold at an affordable price.

The Krugerrand dominated the world's coin market over the next nine years but during the years when sanctions were applied against the South African  government in the mid 1980's, other mints took the opportunity to issue their own bullion coins. However, the Krugerrand had already established itself as one of the leading brands in the world and still remains so in the 21st century.

The South African Mint proudly sells proof quality Krugerrands which are encapsulated and issued with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Limited editions of proof quality Krugerrands are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, as singles or in sets.
