2010 Peace Park Series
Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation and Resource Area

A new theme for this series began in 2007 featuring South Africa’s Peace Parks and commenced with the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The IAi-IAis / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (ARTP) followed in 2008 and the Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Project (MDTP) in 2009. The theme for 2010 features the “Lumbombo Transfrontier Conservation and Resource Area” (Lubombo).

This Peace Park is particularly interesting in that five distinct transfrontier conservation areas (TFCA), crossing the three borders of South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique, make up the Lubombo.

One of these TFCA links the Ponta do Ouro-Inhaca coastline of Mozambique with the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in South Africa. It is the only coastal conservation area in Africa, which crosses a border between two countries. The uniqueness of this area is portrait on the 50c (2 oz) coin which features the endangered loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) swimming amongst coral reeves.

On the 20c (1 oz) coin the  prehistoric Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is portrayed as it is a characteristic of the estuaries and rivers found in most areas of the Lubombo.

The Zulu, Swazi, Tembe and Mathenjwa people historically shared a common culture but the created borders as a result of colonization divided the people over time into different nations. The “reed dance” as depicted on the 10c (1/2 oz) coin is still a common denominator between the cultures.

The beautiful indigenous red Flame Lily (Gloriosa) depicted on the 5c (1/4 oz) coin is highly toxic and yet used for medicinal purposes. It was chosen to represent the unique flora in this area.

The establishment of Transfrontier Conservation Areas in southern Africa provides a system for sustainable economic  development, conservation of biodiversity and regional peace and stability.
