MARITIME HISTORY OF SOUTH AFRICA

In 2009 the theme “Maritime History of South Africa” was introduced on the R2 Crown and the popular “Tickey”. The 2009 coin series depicted the Drommedaris and the São Gabriel. ey represented a history of sailing ships which brought the explorers and settlers to our shores.

In 2010, the coins featured the Royal Mailships Windsor Castle III and the Scot which transported mail, cargo, passengers and well-known personalities to and from South Africa. During the 1970, mainly due to the competition from airlines the South African liner trade started to decline. Cruise ships and container ships developed and became more specialized and effcient.

In 2011 the RMS Queen Mary 2 features on the R2 Crown and represents the modern age of luxury transatlantic ocean liners. The heavy lift cargo ship, the SA van der Stel, is depicted on the Tickey (2½ c). In the mid 1960s, the SA van der Stel, became part of the South African Marine Corporation’s (Safmarine) cargo enterprise.

The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is the flagship of the Cunard shipping line. At the time of her construction she was the largest and tallest passenger ship ever built. To put her size into perspective, the QM2 is longer than the Eiffel Tower in Paris is tall. The QM2 can accommodate 2620 passengers and 1253 crew members. Among the many facilities this grand ship boasts the largest library and the only planetarium at sea. During her 103 day world voyage in 2011 she stopped over in Cape Town and Durban.

The SA van der Stel, a heavy lift container ship of the Safmarine fleet, entered service in the mid 1960s. She arrived in South Africa on her maiden voyage on 23 August 1966. Safmarine was formed in 1946 by South African industrialists and American ship owners. In 1947 they started a South African based cargo enterprise. Today Safmarine Container Lines NV is a Belgian shipping company, specialising in sea transportation of cargoes between Africa, the Middle East and the  Indian Subcontinent.
