The Khoisan Heritage
The terms San, Khwe, Sho, Bushmen, and Basarwa have all been used to refer to the hunter-gatherer peoples of southern Africa. Khoisan is a general term used to describe these native people of southern Africa. National Geographic’s Genographic Project ascertained that San blood contains some of the oldest genetic markers on Earth. The Khoisan’s arts are storytelling, music and painting. Their imaginary world is as real as their physical world. The Khoisan have left a lasting record of their life through thousands of rock-art paintings.
The 2011 R2 Gold coin portrays a present day shaman (ritual specialist) holding his stick and part of a rock painting in which San women, men and shamans take part in a trance dance. In this rock painting, the shamans hold sticks to tap on the ground. Usually it is the women who start the dance by clapping in rhythm to encourage the shaman into a trance. The Kalahari Bushmen go to the spirit world to entreat their god for the lives of the sick, to make rain, and to control the movements of the game animals.
