Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Project

A new theme began in 2007 featuring South Africa's Peace Parks, commencing with the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the │Ai-│Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (ARTP) in 2008 and the Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation and Development Project" (MDTP) is featured in 2009.

In June 2001 the Lesotho and South Africa governments signed an agreement that led to the establishment of the MDTP and is the region's main watershed. Millions of people rely on its water and resources for their survival. The challenge is to ensure that the cultural and natural heritage is preserved as well.

50c: The spectacular "Amphitheatre" is a soaring crescent of 1000m of sheer basalt cliffs in the Drakensberg (Barrier of Spears). The Thukela River in centre of the coin is one of the 5 large rivers which originate from this area.

20c: A highly endangered Cape Griffon Vulture (Gyps copretheres) preparing to land. The area with its high cliffs is ideal for breeding purposes but the continuous destruction of their natural habitat and the many fatal hazards which accompany human development, threaten their survival.

10c: A typical Basotho from the high mountainous area in Lesotho on his sturdy pony, with traditional dwellings in the background.

5c: The endangered perfectly spiral aloe (Aloe polyphylla) is a rare and beautiful aloe found only in the high Maloti mountains of Lesotho. The "bubbling" water effect on all four coins links the designs in this series and is symbolic of the five main rivers which originate from this area sustaining a majority of South Africans.
