2007 Tickey and Crown

International Polar Year (2007 – 2008)

The sterling silver 2½c tickey and R2 crown depict a special once-off theme for 2007 called the International Polar Year 2007 – 2008 to celebrate the 4th International Polar Year (IPY), which is part of a world-wide coin programme. In 2007 international polar research communities will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first International Polar Year (IPY) which took place from 1881 – 1884. Polar awareness has greatly increased amongst the general public during the last few decades. The upcoming events will emphasise the importance of co-ordinated scientific and geological polar research even further.

The IPY for 2007-2008 will include research in both polar regions and recognise the strong links these regions have with the rest of the globe. It will involve a wide range of research disciplines, including the social sciences, but the emphasis will be interdisciplinary in its approach and truly international in participation. It aims to educate and involve the public, and to help train the next generation of engineers, scientists, and leaders.

The reverse of the both the 2½c tickey and R2 crown contains elements of our planet linked with the prehistoric "Gondwana", which was a composite continent, made up of South America, Africa, Madagascar, Antarctica, India, other parts of South Asia and Australia. The official logo of the IPY is featured on the R2 crown.

A protea, the year "2007" and "South Africa" is depicted on the obverse on the 2½c tickey. The South African coat of arms, the year "2007" and "South Africa" written in all official languages appear on the obverse of the R2 crown.

This Combination Set consists of the sterling silver 2½ c (Tickey) and R2 (Crown) coins, which are packaged together in a wooden box with a silver pendant of Gondwana. The wood from whichthe box is made is an indigenous South African wood called “African Rosewood”. Each set issued has an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity. This Certificate of Authenticity guarantees the quality and authenticity of the coins made by the South African Mint Company.

R2 (Crown) Coin

The sterling silver R2 (Crown) coin is packaged in a blue leatherette box. Each coin issued has an individually numbered certificate of
authenticity. This Certificate of Authenticity guarantees the quality and authenticity of the coins made by the South African Mint
Company.

2½ c (Tickey) Coin

The sterling silver 2½ c (Tickey) coin is packaged in a blue pouch. Each coin issued has an individually numbered Certificate of
Authenticity. This Certificate of Authenticity guarantees the quality and authenticity of the coins made by the South African Mint
Company.

Certificate of Authenticity

Each coin and coin set issued by the South African Mint Company has a Certificate of Authenticity. The certificate describes the coin’s
specifications, the year, the limited edition as well as a short description of the product. It also depicts the signature of the South
African Mint’s Managing Director, Mr Andile Mvinjelwa.
To prevent the duplication of a South African Mint product, the certificates are re-designed each year to include the coin design and
each certificate is individually numbered according to the limited edition of the coin or set. As another security measure, the South
African Mint’s logo, which is printed in transparent ink and only visible under ultra-violet light, features as part of the layout
