The concept of the Krugerrand was first introduced by the South African Chamber of Mines in the 1960’s to promote physical gold as an investment opportunity for the "man on the street". The Krugerrand was released in 1967 as a legal tender coin and contained exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold. This gold coin was unique in that it had no denomination because its face value was connected to the daily gold price. The Krugerrand was mass produced so that it could be sold at a relatively low premium over the current gold price. In 1980 the fractional Krugerrands (½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz) were released, making the Krugerrand affordable to more people. The Krugerrand dominated the world’s coin market over the next nine years but during the years when sanctions against the South African government were applied in the mid 1980’s, other mints elsewhere took the opportunity to issue their own legal tender bullion gold coins. However, the Krugerrand had become one of the world’s leading brand names and remains so today in the 21st century. The Krugerrand is available in both bullion and proof state. The South African Mint proudly sells the proof Krugerrands which are encapsulated and issued with a numbered certificate of authenticity. These proof Krugerrands are available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10th oz, as singles or in sets. Krugerrand Coin Specifications

As another security measure, the South African Mint’s logo, which is printed in transparent ink and only visible under ultra-violet light, features as part of the layout. |
