Struck for the first time on 3 July 1967, with the aim of marketing South African gold, this legend in the coin industry was conceived when the concept of a legal tender gold coin linked to the daily gold price was introduced in South Africa.

The effigy of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) is depicted on the obverse. The reverse was originally designed and engraved by the famous sculptor, Coert Steynberg, and features one of South Africa’s national animal, a Springbok.

2019 | NATURA – PALAEONTOLOGY: The rise of the Dinosaurs

Order Here

A new chapter in the award-winning Natura series begins with the introduction of palaeontology, in recognition of South Africa’s significance to this field and study of plant and animal fossils. In this first instalment of the palaeontology-themed coins, the focus is ‘Rise of the dinosaurs – Archosauria’ over the five 24ct gold coins.
The Karoo supergroup of South Africa is one of the geological wonders of the world. This 12 km thick layer of sedimentary rock was set down over a period of almost 120 million years when South Africa was still part of southern Gondwanaland.

The Archosauria- crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds- or the ruling reptiles, were magnificent beasts which ruled over the land and sky for 180 million years, from the Triassic to the Cretacecous periods. The Archosauriforms evolved at the end of the Triassic, finally taking over the last enclaves of synapsid domination. The next step of evolution, which saw the rise of the dinosaurs, crocodiles and pterosaurs, was imminent.

Order Here

The Big Five Series is introduced for the first time in 2019. The South African Mint celebrates Africa’s unique natural heritage by embodying the strength and beauty of the “Big 5” in this new series of fine-silver brilliant uncirculated legal tender coins.

The coins will be issued every month, with the first installment in February 2019, featuring the African elephant. From its versatile trunk and imposing tusks, to ears that flap forward as a sign of intimidation, the African elephant is a symbol of majestic strength and family unity. It is also the largest living land animal on earth, and one of our most intelligent species.

“The Big Five” term originated when big game hunters visited the shores of Africa to shoot for trophies, and locals warned them about the five most dangerous animals in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo.

2019 | CRADLE OF HUMANKIND: Hominids

Order Here

The second instalment of the palaeontology theme features the ‘Cradle of Humankind – hominids’. Hominin species refer to any member of the family tree that split from the common ancestor we share with chimpanzees and ultimately ended with the appearance of humans, while the term hominid is used to include humankind and the chimpanzee, bonobo, gorilla and orangutan.

These species are represented by the hundreds of thousands of fossils that have been discovered in virtually every province in South Africa, which are far more than the hominin fossils that have been discovered in the rest of the world put together. These fossils also represent more hominin species than those found in any other country in the world.

Thus Africa can be regarded as the birthplace of humankind and therefore everyone on earth can trace their ancestry back to Africa. Of all the countries in the world, no one can tell the story of human origins better than South Africa. The title ‘Cradle of Humankind’ is well deserved because more hominin species have been discovered in South Africa than any other country in the world.

Every coin in this series is a miniature ambassador that tells the story of the origin of humans and South Africa as the birthplace of humankind.

2019 CELEBRATING SOUTH AFRICA – 25 YEARS OF CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY: SA25

Order Here

2019 marks a monumental 25 years of Constitutional Democracy for the nation of South Africa. To reinvigorate national pride, the South African Mint released the SA25 themed coin range under the series ‘Celebrating South Africa’. South Africans were consulted on their interpretation of democracy and freedom and shared the symbols that they associate with these values. This commemorative coin range was then developed, giving everyone an opportunity to reflect on our diverse identity as a country.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa is the supreme law, with the Bill of Rights being the cornerstone of democracy in South Africa. It enshrines the rights of all people in the country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom. After deliberating with South Africans from all walks of life and from all backgrounds who were born during this time, it was decided that this commemorative coin range would portray some of these rights as contained in the Bill of Rights.

2019 | R2 CROWN & TICKEY – SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS: POLYMER PUTTY

Order Here

The 2019 ‘South African Inventions’ theme features the history, invention and development of polymer putty as well as its journey to the moon. Invented by South African George Montague (Monty) Pratley, the world famous Pratley Putty was developed in the 1960’s as an insulator and an adhesive agent for fixing brass terminals which were located inside cast iron cable junction boxes.

This putty was used on the Ranger spacecraft produced and flown to study the moon. This American spacecraft was the first to land on the moon and thus helped lay the groundwork for the successful moon landing and safe return of a human during the NASA Apollo XI mission.

The South African Mint celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing with the ‘South African inventions’ series, focusing on the only South African product to ever go to the moon, Pratley Putty.
This series was launched in 2016, to highlight globally relevant inventions and firsts by South Africans. The dolos was the first invention to be featured, followed by the first successful human-to-human heart transplant in 2017, and Computed Tomography or CT scan on 2018.

2019 | PROTEA – LIFE OF A LEGEND: Nelson Mandela, Legacy

Order Here

The year 2019 celebrates the 25th year of a free and democratic South Africa, and so it is fitting that the legacy left by the first democratically elected President of South Africa is depicted as a conclusion to the series. The ‘Life of a Legend – Nelson Mandela’ Protea series was introduced in 2013, representing a different chapter of Former South African President, Nelson Mandela’s life on each year’s coin issue.
South Africa’s first democratically elected president served only one term in power from 10 May 1994 to 14 June 1999.

He, however, remained active even after his term, seeking peace and social justice in South Africa and around the world. His date of birth, 18 July, was declared ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’ by the United Nations in recognition of his contributions to democracy, freedom, peace and human rights around the world.

On this day, everyone in the world is encouraged to harness their ability to have a positive effect on their community and remember and live the values embraced by Nelson Mandela, which include democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect.

Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95 on 5 December 2013
