In the Jubilee year of the Krugerrand,2017, we celebrated South Africa’s numismatic history on the 2017 Natura coin series by featuring illustrated springbok designs created by South African sculptor Coert Steynberg (7 January 1905–28 July 1982) in 1946/47.
These illustrations were created for the design of the 1947 5-shilling coin. The final coin relief of the prancing springbok was later used for the reverse design of the now world-famous Krugerrand.

The reverse design of all five coin features a conceptual line drawings of the springbok in different forms, from the 1947 5 shilling coin designs, together with the words ‘Natura’, ‘Coert Steynberg’, the year ’47-17’, the denomination and hallmark.
The obverse depicts a detail of an illustration together with the words ‘South Africa’ and the year ‘2017’.
