The black wildebeest or gnu (Connochaetes gnou) is found throughout the Free State, KwaZulu- Natal, the northern grassveld region
of the Cape and southern regions of Gauteng. The gnu was also depicted on the 2c reverse from 1965 to 1990.

Affectionately known as the King of Antelope, the greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) was chosen for the reverse of the R2 coin that replaced the R2 banknote in the 3rd decimal series. The male kudu’s spiralling horns are one of the characteristics that make this one of Africa’s most impressive antelope.

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), South Africa’s national animal, was
first depicted on the silver crown coins
in 1947. The design has been used on various South African coins from 1953 to 1964. From 1977 to 1990 the springbok appeared on the R1 nickel coins and from 1990 to date, on the smaller R1 in the 3rd decimal series.
