The iconic Krugerrand celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. To celebrate the enduring value of this trusted and legendary gold coin, the range was extended and new sizes and metals were introduced. The standard four gold coins saw the introduction of four additional sizes: a 50oz and 5oz on the large end of the scale, and a 1/20oz and 1/50oz on the smaller side of the scale.
The classic springbok design used for the last
49 years continues to be used on these new
gold coins. Originally designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg, the springbok on the gold coins’ reverse is accompanied by a ‘50th anniversary’ privy mark to commemorate the enduring value of this internationally-recognised brand.

As with the original gold coin minted on 3 July 1967, the extended gold Krugerrand range bears the undeniable weight of the Krugerrand legacy and carries it forward with superior technological advancements. Each coin is hand positioned and pressed several times at a lower weight, allowing for immaculate transfer of detail and ensuring a truly beautiful gloss every time.
The common obverse design features Paul Kruger, then-president of South Africa, as modelled by die-engraver Otto Schultz and struck from the original die used in 1892 for the historic Kruger half-crown coin.
