2020 | NATURA – PALAEONTOLOGY: The rise of the Dinosaurs
A new chapter in the award-winning Natura series began with the introduction of the palaeontology theme in 2018, in recognition of South Africa’s significance to this field and study of plant and animal fossils.
The first instalment of the palaeontology-themed 24ct gold coins focused on ‘Rise of the dinosaurs – Archosauria, and as a response to popular demand, the South African Mint release the very first silver Natura coin under this theme in 2019.
The South African Mint is proud to introduce the 2020 silver Natura coin, the second ever silver coin to join the Natura series. This coin also focuses on the ‘Rise of the dinosaurs – Archosauria’ theme and bears the same image as the 2018 1oz 24ct gold coin – the Coelophysis rhodesiensis

2020 | Krugerrand
Struck for the first time on 3 July 1967, with the aim of marketing South African gold, this legend in the coin industry was conceived when the concept of a legal tender gold coin linked to the daily gold price was introduced in South Africa.
The effigy of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) is depicted on the obverse. The reverse was originally designed and engraved by the famous sculptor, Coert Steynberg, and features one of South Africa’s national animal, a Springbok.

2020 | BIG 5: RHINO
The South African Mint celebrates Africa’s unique natural heritage by embodying the strength and beauty of the Big Five in this new series of fine-silver brilliant uncirculated legal tender coins.
The coins are issued every 6 months, starting with the Elephant and the Lion in 2019. The Rhino is the third of the ferocious 5 to be featured in this series. Rhinoceroses are easily recognised by their prehistoric features such as armour-like bodies and the horns on their foreheads.
Rhinos, unfortunately, face a dire threat from poaching and rank among the most endangered species on earth. Their horns are made up of the highly sought after keratin, which is used for its supposed medicinal purposes.
The “Big Five” term originated when big game hunters visited the shores of Africa to shoot for trophies, and locals warned them about the five most dangerous animals in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo.

2020 I CROWN AND TICKEY – SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS: RETINAL CRYOPROBE
The 2020 Crown and Tickey series features a South African invention that has revolutionised cataract surgery. The retinal cryoprobe was developed by South African ophthalmologist and inventor, Selig Percy Amoils, at the Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa.
The cryoprobe is a pen-like instrument that delivers extremely cold liquid gas, with precision and accuracy. The cryoprobe is inserted into a cut in the eye to deliver a liquid gas , which freezes to a cataract. The cataract (or other unwanted tissue) can then be removed with no risk of destroying healthy adjacent tissue.
It has since found applications in the field of general as well as veterinary medicine.

2020 | BIG 5: LEOPARD
The South African Mint celebrates Africa’s precious wildlife by embodying the strength and beauty of the Big Five in this series of legal tender coins.
The coins are issued in different metals and qualities every 6 months, since their first issue in 2019. The Leopard is the third of the ferocious five to be featured on this series. They are the most mysterious and subtle of all the big cats, and their strength enables them to easily drag the body of a large kill onto a tree to protect the carcass from scavengers like hyenas. Their diet sometimes include fish as they are good swimmers.
Most leopards are light, golden coloured and covered in dark spots referred to as rosettes because of their shape. They are solitary animals; males and females only spend a brief time together while mating, and thereafter go their separate ways again leaving the female to raise the cubs on her own.
The “Big Five” term originated when big game hunters visited the shores of Africa to shoot for trophies, and locals warned them about the five most dangerous animals in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino and Buffalo.

2020 | KRUGERRAND: LOST HOARD
While it is true that gold was evacuated from Pretoria by the Transvaal Government during the Boer War (1899-1902), no accurate account has ever been produced of its fate, spawning an urban legend of the ‘Kruger Millions’. The appeal of this missing gold thus makes the recent discovery of a large parcel of 910 Kruger ponde such a significant find.
Named ‘the Lost Hoard’ by the numismatic community, this parcel was stored in the Netherlands during the early 20th century, and then transferred to Switzerland before the Second World War (1939-1945) for safekeeping. It remained in a Swiss vault for decades, until it was recently sold at an auction.
