2020 | NATURA – PALAEONTOLOGY: The rise of the Dinosaurs
A new chapter in the award-winning Natura series began with the introduction of the palaeontology theme in 2018, in recognition of South Africa’s significance to this field and study of plant and animal fossils.
The first instalment of the palaeontology-themed 24ct gold coins focused on ‘Rise of the dinosaurs – Archosauria, and as a response to popular demand, the South African Mint release the very first silver Natura coin under this theme in 2019.
The South African Mint is proud to introduce the 2020 silver Natura coin, the second ever silver coin to join the Natura series. This coin also focuses on the ‘Rise of the dinosaurs – Archosauria’ theme and bears the same image as the 2018 1oz 24ct gold coin – the Coelophysis rhodesiensis
R25 1oz Fine-Silver: Coelophysis Rhodesiensis
This R25 fine-silver coin features the Coelophysidae which were highly successful primitive theropod dinosaurs that lived worldwide from the late Triassic to early Jurassic. Coelophysis rhodesiensis, a small, agile dinosaur which preyed on small animals, inhabited South Africa and Zimbabwe during the early part of the Jurassic period. This slenderly built, bipedal dinosaur grew up to 3 m long and weighed about 32 kg.

The obverse depicts the fossilised skull, neck and shoulder of an Erythrosuchus africanus. The words ‘Rise of the dinosaurs’, ‘Archosauria’ and the year 2020 as roman numerals ‘MMXX’ complete the obverse design.
2020 | Krugerrand
Struck for the first time on 3 July 1967, with the aim of marketing South African gold, this legend in the coin industry was conceived when the concept of a legal tender gold coin linked to the daily gold price was introduced in South Africa.
The effigy of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) is depicted on the obverse. The reverse was originally designed and engraved by the famous sculptor, Coert Steynberg, and features one of South Africa’s national animal, a Springbok.
2oz Fine-Silver Proof Krugerrand
The 2oz silver Krugerrand makes its debut in 2020, after the popularity of the 2oz gold Krugerrand, introduced in 2018.
The 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10oz were the first fractional coins to be introduced to the range in 1980.
Formerly the smallest gold Krugerrand available, the 1/10oz is a popular size that also makes up various sets we have available in 2020.
Introduced for the first time as part of the 50th anniversary range, the 1/20oz gold coin makes a return in 2020, but only as part of the ‘Prestige Set’.
Limited Edition: N/A as a single coin
1/50oz Gold Proof Krugerrand
The smallest gold coin available from the South African Mint and introduced for the first time with the 50th anniversary range, the 1/50oz coin also forms part of the various Krugerrand sets available in 2020.
The South African Mint celebrates Africa’s unique natural heritage by embodying the strength and beauty of the Big Five in this new series of fine-silver brilliant uncirculated legal tender coins.
The coins are issued every 6 months, starting with the Elephant and the Lion in 2019. The Rhino is the third of the ferocious 5 to be featured in this series. Rhinoceroses are easily recognised by their prehistoric features such as armour-like bodies and the horns on their foreheads.
Rhinos, unfortunately, face a dire threat from poaching and rank among the most endangered species on earth. Their horns are made up of the highly sought after keratin, which is used for its supposed medicinal purposes.
The “Big Five” term originated when big game hunters visited the shores of Africa to shoot for trophies, and locals warned them about the five most dangerous animals in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo.
2020 Big 5 Rhino Brilliant Uncirculated
The reverse of the coin features two halves of the rhino’s face, detailing its eye, ears and horn. This ingenious design allows for a complete close-up of a rhino to be seen only when two of the coins are placed next to each other (as seen in the double-capsule proof set).
When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a herd is formed.

The obverse design of these coins bears the breath-taking design of the African Rhino, which fills up much of the surface area of the coin. The words ‘South Africa’, ‘Big 5 2020’ appear below the image, with South Africa’s national coat-of-arms in the centre.
The collectable circulation sets are each made up of the following:
The Black Wildebeest or Gnu found in the northern grassveld regions of the Cape, throughout the Free State, KwaZulu Natal and the southern regions of Gauteng. The Black Wildebeest was also depicted on the 2c reverse from 1965 to 1990.
The Kudu, “King of Antelope”, was chosen for the reverse of the R2 coin which replaced the banknote in the 3rd decimal series. The wide spiralling horns are characteristic of the male kudu, which make it one of Africa’s most impressive antelope.
The Springbok, South Africa’s national animal, was first depicted on the silver crown coins from 1947-1951 and 1953-1959. The Springbok was once again chosen for the reverse of the silver 50c (1961-1964), the gold £1 and gold £½ (1952-1960) and the gold R1 and R2 (1961-1964). It was again depicted on the 50c from 1960-1964. From 1977 to 1990, the Springbok appeared on the R1 nickel coins and from 1990 to date, on the smaller R1 in the 3rd series. The Springbok is also depicted on the reverse of our world-renowned Krugerrand.
The Strelitzia (Crane Flower or Bird-Of-Paradise Flower) first appeared together with the Arum Lily and Blue Agapanthus on the 50c coin (1965-1990) as part of the 2nd decimal series, and alone on the 50c in the 3rd series.
The King Protea, South Africa’s national flower, first appeared on the tickey and sixpence from 1925 to 1960 and again in the 1st decimal series (1961-1964) on the 2½c and 5c. The Protea was chosen for the reverse of the 20c in the 2nd series (1965-1989) and 3rd coin series.
The Arum Lily is a distinguished southern African flower. It originally appeared on the 50c coins from 1965-1989. From 1990 onwards it was featured on the 10c coins as part of the country’s 3rd decimal series. In 2012 the plating on the 10c coin was changed from bronze to copper, giving it a reddish appearance.
