The renowned Krugerrand, a legal tender gold coin, was first minted at the South African Mint on July 3, 1967, containing precisely 1 troy ounce of pure gold. Over the years, it has retained its original design from 1967, with each new edition displaying the current year.
The name ‘Krugerrand’ is a blend of Paul ‘Kruger’ and ‘rand,’ South Africa’s currency. The rand is also associated with the Witwatersrand, meaning ‘the ridge of white water,’ a significant gold-producing region in South Africa.
Paul Kruger’s likeness is featured on the obverse side of the coin. The reverse, originally crafted by the esteemed sculptor Coert Steynberg, showcases a Springbok, one of South Africa’s national animals.
