The iconic Krugerrand is the legal tender gold coin first struck at the South African Mint on 3 July 1967, containing exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold. Through the years, it has kept the same iconic design first seen in 1967, and every new instalment bears the current year.

The name ‘Krugerrand’ was derived by combining Paul ‘Kruger’, with ‘rand’, the monetary unit of South Africa. The rand is also linked to the Witwatersrand, a name meaning ‘the ridge of white water’, an important gold-producing area in South Africa.

The effigy of Paul Kruger is depicted on the obverse. The reverse was originally designed and engraved by the famous sculptor, Coert Steynberg, and features one of South Africa’s national animals, a Springbok.

Krugerrand prestige 7-coin set

Making its second appearance, the 7-coin set offers an exclusive opportunity to embrace the legacy of the Krugerrand coins in its entirety. 2024 Oom Paul Krugerrands

Folllowing the passing of the ‘Mint Act’ in 1891, two mint presses were ordered from Ludw. Loew & Co. in Berlin to allow for the operation of a Mint for the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. The machines had a manufacturing date of 1891.

The single surviving press of the two, now fondly known as ‘Oom Paul’, minted more than 8 million coins between 1892 and 1900, and millions of gold sovereigns (gold £1) during the era when South Africa was governed by the British from 1925 to 1933.

When South Africa broke away from the commonwealth and became a Republic, the first decimal 1c coins were struck on ‘Oom Paul’ in 1961.

And it was also on Oom Paul where the first legendary Krugerrand was struck in 1967, which has now become the most traded bullion coin in the world. Originally steam-operated but later remodelled to be powered by electricity, Oom Paul will unfortunately cease to operate beyond 2024.

To mark this final milestone in the machines’ long life, the South African Mint has decided to use Oom Paul to mint the privy mark on these unique special edition 1 oz and ¼ oz Krugerrands.

R5 Bi-metal Oom Paul

2024 | RSA Circulation Sets

The fourth decimal coin series became legal tender on 1 January 2023. The coin series has a contemporary appearance, and the design elements offer valuable information about the country’s identity; including its culture, national symbols, history, languages, flora and fauna, cities and technology.

The reverse of the coin depicts the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) along with a school of galjoen – South Africa’s national fish – the denomination numeral 5 and the word RAND.

R2 Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) family along with its habitat, the denomination numeral 2 and the word RAND.

R1 Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the king protea (Protea cynaroides), the denomination numeral 1 and the word RAND.

50c Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the Knysna turaco (Tauraco corythaix) and the denomination numeral 50c.

20c Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the bitter aloe (Aloe ferox) and the denomination numeral 20c.

10c Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the Cape honey bee (Apis mellifera capensis) and the denomination numeral 10c.

Obverses

Throughout the different issues of the decimal coin series, the obverse has depicted symbols of national importance like the presidents of South Africa and the national coat of arms as the country’s official seal. On the fourth decimal coin series, the coat of arms remains the official symbol on the R5, R2, 50c, 20c, and 10c coins. However, for the first time on a circulation coin, the national flag of South Africa has been minted on the obverse of the R1 coin.

The obverses also feature the latest evolution of the words ‘South Africa’ written in the official languages, which will ensure that at the end of a cycle, each language’s version of the words ‘South Africa’ would have featured on each denomination within the coin series.

The South African Mint introduces the first ever 1 oz gold Krugerrand with a reverse proof finish applied to the obverse and reverse, bearing the same iconic design first seen on the Krugerrand 57 years ago, in 1967.

2024 | Piedfort Krugerrand

The 2024 2 oz Piedfort is a stunning new format and addition to the Krugerrand coin range.

Pronounced “pee-ay-fore”, the Piedfort is a combination of the French words ‘pied’ (foot) and ‘fort’ (heavy) literally translated the words mean ‘heavy foot’. The idiomatic meaning is ‘heavy weight’. As the name implies, Piedfort coins are twice the thickness, or double the weight as their standard proof coin counterpart of the same diameter and design.

Given the long history of the world renown Krugerrrand, the Piedfort coin is a natural fit for the Krugerrand series. The new Krugerrand 2oz coin features an impressive diameter of 32.69mm with the same popular design first seen with the first Krugerrand in 1967.

Featuring the same design as the standard Krugerrand coins, the Piedfort coin is twice the thickness, or double the weight as their standard proof counterpart of the same diameter and design.

2024 | BIG 5 SERIES IlI: ELEPHANT

The Big 5 Series III coin collection is finally upon us! It represents a significant change in design while offering a strong link to the previous series. The coins feature full-figure depictions of the animals in motion, instead of the portrait designs that typified the first two series.

This first edition features the Elephant, a symbol of strength, power, wisdom and loyalty throughout the world. These intelligent animals are venerated by many people as they exhibit characteristics with which we as humans can identify.
